Middle school students build confidence through “Amazing Shake” competition

At Resurrection-St. Paul School, the “Amazing Shake” competition helps students develop essential social and professional skills. Developed by the Ron Clark Academy, the RSPS version emphasizes confidence, respect, and real-world readiness. This September marks the beginning of RSPS’s third year participating in the Amazing Shake competition.

The process starts in the fall with mock interviews, during which teachers demonstrate interviewing techniques and body language. Students then take part in mock interviews with community business volunteers, allowing them to practice their communication skills and receive constructive feedback.

By spring, students face the next phase of the competition: the gauntlet. This fast-paced event features seven stations that simulate real-life situations, testing students’ composure, politeness, and clarity under pressure.

Top performers advance to a semifinal round at Brown Advisory, an investment firm in Baltimore, where they showcase their critical thinking and adaptability while interacting with investment professionals in a business setting. After this event, a select few finalists compete in a final round, where they present ideas for school improvement to a panel of community business leader judges, further honing their communication skills and professionalism.

While winners are recognized, the true achievement lies in the growth of all participants. School administrators emphasize the invaluable life skills students gain, which boost their confidence both at home and in their interactions. Ultimately, the Amazing Shake equips students with the tools they need for future success and fosters a sense of accomplishment among all who participate.
